The prestigious Bunka Fashion College and Bunka Gakuen University in Shinjuku district, Tokyo, commissioned a handmade floor decorative panel for each entry and a huge wall panel for the main hall - the biggest ever made in our history in one piece (10x13 feet) - in Pietra Dura Inlay technique, also known as Florentine Mosaic. The technique is listed as one of the major Art forms of the Medici family.
In 1998 three big rounded panels depicting three of the four natural elements were produced for each floor of the three main entrances of the buildings. The 13 foot high wall panel for the main hall depicts three classical ladies from the 18th century, reproduced from an old French lithography.
In 2002 another huge life sized wall panel was commissioned for the Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum. The wall panel depicts six people elegantly dressed in early 1920’s style and was reproduced from another French original lithograph from 1923. The perspective was studied so that the chess floor in the wall mosaic panel was aligned with the actual entry floor.
These artworks were produced by Pitti Mosaici srl in Florence, Italy (also owned by the De Filippis family) and made entirely by hand using various marbles, hard and semi-precious stones.
